Projection Mapping the SLS South Beach for Miami Music Week 2017

We had the great honor of projection mapping the iconic SLS Hotel in South Beach, Miami during Miami Music Week 2017. It was, by far, the largest video screen in the entire city that week. Mixing for Luciano – Guy Gerber, NERVO, Afrojack, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Carnage and DADA LIFE – what a blast!

We started by creating a CAD model of the building’s exterior so that we could create custom 3D content for the event. The biggest design challenge was “What to do with the windows?” The hotel would be at capacity, so covering them wouldn’t be an option. We had to find a way to make the windows work for us instead of against us. That’s where working in a 3D space helped us to visualize our work, allowing us to design with confidence!

There was a epiphany moment when we started playing with shadows and crystal materials – Game On!

The model easily imported into our Avolites Ai Media Server. Because of this, most of the work was done ahead of time – offsite, at APstudios. We arrived the day before the show and trained two Barco 20K Flex Projectors to display one seamless image in just a few hours.

Using purely a 3D workflow, via Ai Media and Blender 3D, gave us ultimate flexibility while keeping the project file as simple as possible. Instead of individually masking each window we simply deleted them from the model. This kept our “surfaces” to a minimum – only the model mattered. Onsite adjustments were a breeze because of this.
